Summer Vacation at Cheltenham Ladies’ College
English lessons: 15 hours per week
Cheltenham is one of England’s most beautiful regency towns, and is situated in the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Our Summer Vacation programme takes place at Cheltenham Ladies’ College – although it is suitable for both boys and girls.
The campus is just 10 minutes’ walk from the beautiful town centre, making it a very convenient location for our students.
English lessons on this programme are complemented by a wide and exciting array of social activities. Students will enjoy a guided walking tour of Cheltenham city centre, opportunities to try sports, games, arts, drama, and other organised activities on some afternoons, as well as group games and team building exercises on others.
The programme is also complemented by two full day excursions each week (three in total per fortnight). We visit places such as London, Oxford, Bath, and Stratford-upon-Avon, always with a guided walking tour.
With a strong emphasis on authentic communication, the summer school programme delivers stimulating, relevant and learner-focused English tuition. 15 hours of tuition are included in this programme, plus the opportunity for 6 additional hours of Spires Plus sessions.
Our carefully planned lessons take a communicative and task-based approach and cover a wide variety of topics. Often, they relate directly to activities and excursions which students will join during the programme.
At Oxford Spires International we want our students to have FUN while learning English with us! During the summer programme, we want students to:
- Enjoy learning English
- Develop their learning skills
- Improve their confidence in using English
- Practise their English inside and outside the classroom
- Use their English skills to meet new people and experience the UK
Our enthusiastic and dedicated staff, combined with our communicative and stimulating teaching methods, ensure that students develop and learn at a pace that suits them in a friendly and welcoming educational environment. All of our teachers are native English speakers or equivalent and hold a CELTA or equivalent teaching qualification.
Oxford Spires students will join classes of no more than 15 so that they are given maximum attention and opportunity to participate and enhance their learning. In-class preparation for excursions also takes place to maximise learning outside of the classroom.
Students are encouraged to speak English at all times, during and outside lessons, as consistency and practice are fundamental to language learning.
Lessons will take place either in the morning or the afternoon. Students will know which group they are in at the start of their first week. Morning lessons are from 9:30 to 13:00 (with a 30 minute break), and afternoon lessons are from 14:00 to 17:30 (with a 30 minute break).
NEW for 2020! Spires Plus allows students to experience English language learning in a real-life context that appeals to their interests and is relevant to them.
Spires Plus sessions are usually hands-on, project based lessons or experiences. There is a lot of group work and collaboration, and sometimes a culminating presentation or production.
The options available on this programme are:
- Business and Leadership Skills
- Exam Skills
- Horse Riding
Spires Plus are available to be booked at a supplement of £150 per week. We advise early booking to avoid disappointment.
Two full day excursions are included in our Summer School programmes, and each of the destinations offers a unique cultural and historic experience!
Examples include London, Oxford, Bath, and Stratford-upon-Avon. Students are advised to bring small amounts of pocket money should they wish to purchase souvenirs.
The first day after arrival there will usually be a guided walking tour around the city centre.
Other weekly activities include group games, museum visits, sports afternoons, arts and crafts, drama workshops, and more. Entrances will always be included for scheduled visits.
Evening activities are included for residential programmes every evening. Homestay students in Cheltenham will be invited to two evening activities per week.
Evening activities take place on or off campus, and include movie nights, quiz nights, discos, karaoke, capture the flag, organised group games, ghost walks, and loads more!
Residential or homestay accommodation is available for this programme.
The residence is located a 10 minute walk from the school & offers twin, triple, and larger dormitory style bedrooms with shared bathrooms.
There is a common room/games room where we often spend evenings enjoying board games, video games, film nights, and quiz nights.
Meals are taken in the canteen.
Rooms are cleaned weekly, and bed linens are changed weekly as well. Students are advised to bring their own towels, as these are not provided.
Students who are 12 or older can choose to stay with a local host family.
Homestay students are placed in pairs in each family, and the price is based on two students sharing.
Homestay hosts in Cheltenham will drop students off at school each morning (either accompanying them on foot or driving them), and collect them again at the end of the day.
Hosts will provide a comfortable bedroom, breakfast and dinner each day, as well as bed linens and towels, and a weekly laundry service.
Student safety and welfare is a top priority for us. We want to ensure that each student is happy, healthy and safe.
There is a 24-hour emergency mobile number which is given to students and is made available to students’ families in case of emergencies.
Students are supervised at a ratio of 1:15 during lessons and at school, and 1:20 on activities and excursions. Students are accompanied by staff when walking to and from the residence, and are not allowed to leave the school or residence without a member of staff.
All our staff are qualified to deliver specific aspects of our programmes and undergo staff training and orientation days to ensure all health and safety elements are covered.
At our residential accommodation options, adult members of staff also live in the residence.
