Spend Easter in Oxford!

The beautiful buildings of St Edward’s School provide a perfect backdrop for  students wishing to sample life at a British boarding school.

‘Teddies’ is  located in the lively urban area of Summertown, and is less than a two-minute walk away from a compact collection of cafés, supermarkets, quirky independent shops and a popular artisan baker.
Summertown is Oxford’s most affluent and upmarket area, and St Edward’s School has a world-class reputation with excellent facilities, making the location of this programme a highly attractive feature.

Classes are complemented by a wide and exciting array of social activities. For example, depending on the weekly social programme, students might visit the famous Christ Church College or historic Ashmolean Museum, try punting on the River Thames, explore Oxford University’s many colleges, or perhaps experience a classic British afternoon cream tea.

Oxford is an ideal setting for this immersive, exploratory programme highlighting all the city has to offer.

Course content

With a strong emphasis on authentic communication, the summer school programme delivers stimulating, relevant and learner-focused English tuition. 15 hours of tuition are included in this programme, plus the opportunity for an additional 3 hours of Spires Plus sessions.

Our carefully planned lessons take a communicative and task-based approach and cover a wide variety of topics.  Often, they relate directly to activities and excursions which students will join during the programme.

At Oxford Spires Language School we want our students to have FUN while learning English with us! During all our programmes, we want students to:

  • Enjoy learning English
  • Develop their learning skills
  • Improve their confidence in using English
  • Practise their English inside and outside the classroom
  • Use their English skills to meet new people and experience the UK

Our enthusiastic and dedicated staff, combined with our communicative and stimulating teaching methods, ensure that students develop and learn at a pace that suits them in a friendly and welcoming educational environment. All of our teachers are native English speakers or equivalent and hold a CELTA or equivalent teaching qualification.

At Oxford Spires, students will join classes of no more than 15 so that they are given maximum attention and opportunity to participate and enhance their learning. In-class preparation for excursions also takes place to maximise learning outside of the classroom.

Students are encouraged to speak English at all times, during and outside lessons, as consistency and practice are fundamental to language learning.

Lesson times

Lessons will take place either in the morning. Lessons are from 9:00 to 12:30 with a 30 minute comfort break from 11:00 to 11:30.

NEW for 2020! Spires Plus allows students to experience English language learning in a real-life context that appeals to their interests and is relevant to them.

Spires Plus sessions are usually hands-on, project based lessons or experiences. There is a lot of group work and collaboration, and sometimes a culminating presentation or production.

The options available on this programme are:

  • Business and Leadership Skills
  • Exam Skills

Spires Plus are available to be booked at a supplement of £150 per week. We advise early booking to avoid disappointment.

Day Trips

Two full day excursions are included in this programme, and each of the destinations offers a unique cultural and historic experience!

Examples include London, Windsor, Bath, and Stratford-upon-Avon. Transport and entrance fees are included, and students are advised to bring small amounts of pocket money should they wish to purchase souvenirs.

Afternoon activities

There are two afternoons per week with planned excursions to the city centre. The first day after arrival there will usually be a guided walking tour around the city centre.

Other weekly activities include punting on the river, group games, museum visits, university college visits, and more. Entrances will always be included for scheduled visits.

On days when we are not in the city centre, there will be activities organised on site, after Spires Plus sessions, which include sports,  drama, arts and crafts, and team building exercises.

Evening activities

Evening activities are organised every evening.

Evening activities take place on or off campus, and include movie nights, quiz nights, discos, ice skating, capture the flag, organised group games, ghost walks, and loads more!

Only residential accommodation is available for this programme.

The residence is located a short walk across the school campus & offers single, twin, and larger study bedrooms. There are shared bathroom facilities, and boys and girls are housed in separate boarding facilities.

There is a common room/games room where we often spend evenings enjoying board games, video games, film nights, and quiz nights.

Meals are taken at school in the canteen.

Rooms are cleaned weekly, and bed linens are changed weekly as well. Students are advised to bring their own towels, as these are not provided.

Student safety and welfare is a top priority for us. We want to ensure that each student is happy, healthy and safe.

There is a 24-hour emergency mobile number which is given to students and is made available to students’ families in case of emergencies.

Students are supervised at a ratio of 1:15 during lessons and at school, and 1:20 on activities and excursions. Students are accompanied by staff when walking to and from the residence, and are not allowed to leave the school or residence without a member of staff.

All our staff are qualified to deliver specific aspects of our programmes and undergo staff training and orientation days to ensure all health and safety elements are covered.

At our residential accommodation options, adult members of staff also live in the residence.
