University Summer @ Oxford High

Historic Oxford has been an immensely popular English study destination for years, and students and tourists from all the over the world come to admire its beautiful architecture and intricate heritage.

This programme, new for 2018, offers University and British-themed classes which cover a wide array of topics, aimed at inspiring students and immersing them in Oxford’s rich culture and academia; from traditional British etiquette, to leadership skills, to preparing and delivering an effective speech or presentation.

Classes are complemented by visits from university lecturers and guest speakers, as well as a wide and exciting array of social activities. Visit the famous Christ Church College and beautiful Blenheim Palace, try punting on the river Thames, and experience a classic British afternoon cream tea. In addition to this, our weekly gala dinner taking place in a university college hall each week provides a wonderful opportunity for students to socialise and enjoy a formal dining experience, typical of Oxford university students.

Oxford High School is a leading independent day school located in leafy north Oxford. Its features include a brand new library, dining hall, school hall, drama studio, classrooms and lecture theatre. There is also an indoor swimming pool, playing fields, and tennis and netball courts, all set in 10.5 acres of land.

Course content

With a strong emphasis on authentic communication, the summer school programme delivers stimulating, relevant and learner-focussed English tuition, within the theme of University life and culture. 15 hours of tuition are included in this programme.

Staff

Our enthusiastic and dedicated staff, combined with our innovative and fun teaching methods ensure that students develop and learn at a pace that suits them in a friendly and welcoming educational environment. All of our teachers are native English speakers and hold a CELTA or equivalent teaching qualification.

Classes

At Oxford Spires students will join classes of no more than 15 so that they are given maximum attention and opportunity to participate and enhance their learning. In-class preparation for excursions also takes place to maximise learning outside of the classroom.

Our workshops are held weekly across the summer (twice per week in Oxford, and on every teaching day at Padworth) and give learners a unique opportunity to practise English specific to those topics that interest and engage them the most.

They are topic-based lessons and activities which provide an opportunity for students to engage in practical learning in a context that they find interesting.

From exam skills, to business enterprise, to sport, we offer workshops to suit a variety of tastes, in order to provide students with a stimulating and meaningful learning environment.

Workshops must be chosen at the time of booking, at least for the first week, and can be changed on a weekly basis.

For example, for a two-week booking, the first week’s workshop must be booked, and the second one can be booked during the first week. Two different workshops can be chosen during this study period.

Day Trips

Two full day excursions are included in both of the Summer School programmes, and each of the destinations offers a unique cultural and historic experience!

Examples include London, Windsor, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford (for students at Padworth College), and Warwick Castle. Transport and entrance fees are included, and students are advised to bring small amounts of pocket money should they wish to purchase souvenirs.

Afternoon activities

In Oxford there are three afternoons per week with planned excursions to the city centre. The first Monday afternoon of a student’s stay will always be a guided walking tour around the city centre.

Other weekly activities include punting on the river, group games, museum visits, university college visits, and more. Entrances will always be included for scheduled visits.

Evening activities

Evening activities are included for Padworth and Oxford residential programmes every evening. For Oxford homestay programmes, two evening activities are included.
