Cambridge Summer @ Anglia Ruskin University
English lessons: 15 hours per week
Cambridge is the perfect place to be a student, not only because of its rich academic history, but also because the tradition of learning and academia is still an important part of its culture.
From exploring the university colleges, visiting the museums, strolling across Mathematical Bridge or trying punting for the first time, the programme gives a truly rounded look at everything the city has to offer.
In lessons, students are encouraged to draw on their existing knowledge of English and communicate freely with their international peers. Our teachers aim to create speaking opportunities, encouraging students to activate language and use it in a meaningful context.
With a strong emphasis on authentic communication, the summer school programme delivers stimulating, relevant and learner-focused English tuition. 15 hours of tuition are included in this programme, plus 3 additional hours of Workshops.
Our carefully planned lessons take a communicative and task-based approach and cover a wide variety of topics. Often, they relate directly to activities and excursions which students will join during the programme.
At Oxford Spires Language School we want our students to have FUN while learning English with us! During the summer programme, we want students to:
- Enjoy learning English
- Develop their learning skills
- Improve their confidence in using English
- Practise their English inside and outside the classroom
- Use their English skills to meet new people and experience the UK
Our enthusiastic and dedicated staff, combined with our communicative and stimulating teaching methods, ensure that students develop and learn at a pace that suits them in a friendly and welcoming educational environment. All of our teachers are native English speakers or equivalent and hold a CELTA or equivalent teaching qualification.
At Oxford Spires, students will join classes of no more than 15 so that they are given maximum attention and opportunity to participate and enhance their learning. In-class preparation for excursions also takes place to maximise learning outside of the classroom.
Students are encouraged to speak English at all times, during and outside lessons, as consistency and practice are fundamental to language learning.
Lessons will take place either in the morning or the afternoon. Students will know which group they are in at the start of their first week. Morning lessons are from 9:30 to 13:00 (with a 30 minute break), and afternoon lessons are from 14:00 to 17:30 (with a 30 minute break).
Weekly Workshops allow students to experience English language learning in a real-life context that appeals to their interests and is relevant to them.
Workshops are usually hands-on, project based lessons. There is a lot of group work and collaboration, and sometimes a culminating presentation or production.
Students will know which options are available each week at the beginning of the week, and they will be able to choose which Workshop they join by signing the sign-up sheet posted on the school noticeboard.
From business studies to literature, academic to more creative activities, there are options to suit a range of interests.
Here is a list of sample Workshop options. There will usually be two or three available each week:
- Business Enterprise
- Media Project
- Exam Skills
- University Life
Two full-day excursions are included in the Cambridge Summer programme, and each of the destinations offers a unique cultural and historic experience!
Examples include London, Windsor, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford. Transport and entrance fees are included, and students are advised to bring small amounts of pocket money if they wish to purchase souvenirs.
In Cambridge there are three afternoons per week with planned excursions to the city centre. The first Monday afternoon of a student’s stay will always be a guided walking tour around the city centre.
Other weekly activities include punting on the River Cam, group games, museum visits, university college visits, and more. Entrances will always be included for scheduled visits.
Evening activities are included for residential programmes every evening.
Evening activities take place on or off campus, and include organised events such as movie nights, quiz nights, discos, ice skating, capture the flag, group games, ghost walks, and loads more.
Residential accommodation is available for this programme.
The residence is located a 20 minute walk from the school & offers single, ensuite study bedrooms for students and group leaders.
There is a common room/games room where we often spend evenings enjoying board games, video games, film nights, and quiz nights.
Meals are taken at school in the canteen.
Rooms are cleaned weekly, and bed linens are changed weekly as well. Students are advised to bring their own towels, as these are not provided.

tudent safety and welfare is a top priority for us. We want to ensure that each student is happy, healthy and safe.
There is a 24-hour emergency mobile number which is given to students and is made available to students’ families in case of emergencies.
Students are supervised at a ratio of 1:15 during lessons and at school, and 1:20 on activities and excursions. Students are accompanied by staff when walking to and from the residence, and are not allowed to leave the school or residence without a member of staff.
Homestay students travel to and from school unaccompanied.
All our staff are qualified to deliver specific aspects of our programmes and undergo staff training and orientation days to ensure all health and safety elements are covered.
